Choosing Playground Equipment for all ages

Playgrounds are a staple through every stage of childhood.

From toddlers to grade school kids, everyone can enjoy moments of freedom while getting to burn some energy out on the playground. That said, not all playground equipment is meant for all ages to play on it.

What Playground Equipment is Best for Different Age Groups?

Toddlers

Children can be introduced to playgrounds shortly after learning how to walk, with proper supervision of course. Specific playground equipment is made for toddlers from 6 to 23 months. This involves low-level climbing equipment, ramps, small slides, bucket seat swings, and more.

Playground equipment for toddlers should be easy to navigate and sized appropriately for small children, including structures that are lower to the ground than typical. Other types of equipment may include interactive or sensory elements that are appropriate for early learning.

Preschool

Preschool children, from ages 2 to 5 years, can enjoy equipment that is a step above play areas for toddlers. Playgrounds for preschool children can be slightly elevated, featuring multiple levels for them to explore. However, these types of playgrounds have some similar advised restrictions with bucket seat swings.

Preschool playgrounds may also have small-scale net climbers and various riders such as spring rockers. Daycares have many options for their play areas.

Grade School

Playgrounds for children from ages 5 to 12 years allow for larger elements. Grade school kids generally have improved motor skills by this age and can handle more freeform types of play. Age-appropriate equipment for grade school playgrounds includes taller structures, slides that exceed a 360° turn, open swing seats, and vertical sliding poles, among other elements.

As this is the largest age group (covering multiple years), grade school level playgrounds are the most common, as seen at schools, HOAs, and other communities.

Choosing the Playground Right for Your Kids

The equipment mentioned above are just a few examples of what you could include in an age-appropriate play area. There are plenty more options available. To know exactly what your playground calls for, a playground professional will be a tremendous help. You may even be planning an area meant for multiple age groups; in that case, certain considerations like a buffer between play areas would be advised. But, you won’t have to worry about those kinds of details when you’ve got help.
