There are a variety of factors that affect the appropriate amount of clearance a shade structure needs over a playground.
If your playground doesn’t have its own roof, the shade structure should be installed 84 inches above the tallest deck surface to ensure proper clearance and optimal shade coverage.
If the playground has a built-in roof, the shade structure should sit at least 3 feet above that roof—putting it out of children’s reach and maintaining compliance with ASTM and CPSC safety standards.
Plus, to ensure safety and avoid collisions, support posts should be placed outside the playground’s 2-D use zone, which generally means at least six feet away from the play structure
