Fanuel Street Park's playground equipment had deteriorated so severely over the years that the City of San Diego removed it entirely in 2024 due to safety concerns, leaving the space vacant. The park, once a hub of community activity, had become informally known as "Felony Park." With no city plans or taxpayer funding in place to replace the equipment, residents felt the loss of this cherished gathering space acutely. The coastal Mission Bay park, known for its salt spray and high humidity, also demanded a durable solution that could withstand the elements long-term.

Zoom Recreation partnered with the San Diego Parks Foundation and the City of San Diego's Parks & Recreation Department to develop a plan for rebuilding the park. The Foundation secured $45,000 in private funding, at no cost to taxpayers, to purchase new commercial playground equipment, which Zoom Recreation installed pro bono. The new playground is crafted from recycled plastic engineered to mimic the look of natural wood, making it resistant to corrosion from salt spray and humidity, an ideal choice for the Mission Bay coastal setting. Built to endure for many years to come, this sustainable installation restores both a safe play space and community pride to the neighborhood. The park is scheduled to be completed before Memorial Day weekend 2026.
