This project involved a few unique challenges. The budget was tight, and it allowed for only one playground structure. The original discussion included only one playground structure suitable for 2–12-year-olds. However, there was a concern for the safety of the smaller kids when the older kids were playing / running. Also, there was not an existing concrete curb to hold the poured-in-place rubber. We needed to find a creative solution to successfully hold the rubber in place. Finally, the overall area end to end had more than 5" of slope. It was between 3% and 5%. Having an open play area with that steep turn down in the middle was going to be an issue, especially for the installation of the poured-in-place rubber which requires no more than 2% in slope.

For the budget, we capitalized on SUPERIOR’s 50% promotional flyer that allowed for two playground structures: one suitable for kids aged 2-5 and the other one for 5-12 year-olds. This solution allowed us to fulfill the clients needs while staying within the budget. To address the missing concrete curb, we built a turndown for the poured-in-place rubber that would hold it in place. As for the steep slope, we installed a dividing fence in the middle section that would allow a 2% slope in the upper playground, then a drastic turn down edge at the dividing fence to start back at 0% for the next level playground. The project was completed on time, on specification, and on budget!
