We collaborated with Trinity Lutheran Church & Preschool to build out a play environment for their students featuring different elements of physical, creative and dramatic play.

The Challenge

The school was in the process of moving locations and wanted an updated play space that would encourage physical play during the day while also being safe and secure. We worked towards creating a modern aesthetic mixed with the feel of a traditional playground while incorporating premium safety surfacing and a trike track into the design. We faced several challenges during the course of this project. Our very first challenge was designing a preschool play space that bordered a parking lot, which can be dangerous with younger children unaware of the nearby danger. During the construction phase of the project, we unexpectedly received short notice from the client that a landscape buffer would need to be included, which resulted in drastic changes in all of our surfacing areas.

Our Solution

To overcome these challenges, our design team worked together with the client and installation team. As a result, we were able to build an entire perimeter of wrought-iron fencing around the lot. This addressed the safety concerns of the school and ensured a safe play environment for the children. We avoided underground utility lines running through the lot and incorporated a landscaped buffer between the fencing and trike track. This involved new calculations of all of our surface area numbers for the pour-in-place rubber, turf and trike track. Ultimately, we were able to reduce our clients' cost with these changes and add a modern feel to the space!

Project Manager

As a project manager, I love the creativity and freedom to build out a vision from scratch. I grew up climbing everything. Looking back, this contributed towards my development as a child. When designing a play space, I believe some of the most important aspects are imaginative, creative, and physical play. When I'm not working, I'm immersed in sports, especially football, golf, and snowboarding!
